Where Sirus came from is never fully revealed, as the earliest thing confirmed is that he simply appeared in the Moon Flower Palace with no name or home that he knew of, but he later recalls his role as a Guardian of the Stars. It's also implied that he's no older than Max or Monca, making him around 14-15.
He states late in the game, that the Ancients gave his ancestors the knowledge of how to stop the Star of Oblivion and that that knowledge was passed down to him, being his true purpose in life but that the memory had been blocked. Somehow, due to events prior to him finding his way to the palace garden most likely, those memories and knowledge were locked away. Given the fact his world was being ravaged by wars as the humans fought for control over the Atlamillia, it's very likely that his home was destroyed and whatever trauma occurred during that resulted in his memory being erased.
As he was then though, he hadn't known any of this and had somehow gotten into the Moon Flower Palace's garden to admire the flowers. He was caught by a guard who assumed he was a thief despite his protests and insistence that he wasn't. As he was being forced out they passed by the queen, Alexandra. Much to his and the guard's surprise, Alexandra not only believed him over the guard, but gave him the name "Sirus" and allowed him to live in the palace as garden caretaker upon learning he had no name or home. The two of them became close friends over time and life was blissful for Sirus with her. He learned a lot from her, especially the belief that everything in life has a role.
Soon though, more wars followed and it came to the point that Alexandra's kingdom would fall to her enemies. Despite his almost tantrum-like protests, Alexandra decided to remain and fall with her kingdom rather than escape...but ordered him to escape alone. He's later seen walking the barren land alone and questioning both her decision and the point of warring over some stupid shiny stones, when it involved and hurt those who had nothing to do with anything. The humans to collect the three Atlamillia and the world had been ravaged by the second moon falling to wipe out most life on the planet as a result, which explains why his time period only had one moon when the protagonists go there.
Eventually his loneliness and misery became hatred and he succumbed to his newfound hatred of humanity, deciding that they all needed to be wiped out permanently. He planned then to use the Star of Oblivion to completely erase the world's civilizations so the planet could begin again without them...as well as to end his own life in the process. Sometime after this he began trying to gather the Atlamillia himself and returned to the palace, where he destroyed the garden because it reminded him of his lost friend.
Unable to find more than the yellow Atlamillia, he searched into the future 10,000 years, by sending his will into the future to recruit those who were in sympathy with it. Because of the darkness he didn't realize was growing in his heart, his forces were mostly those who were just naturally evil. But some were those like him, such as Gaspard, who had suffered because of humanity. A war started there, though there were many powerful forces to oppose him and protect the holder of the blue Atlamillia, King Raybrant. In order to get it, he had Gaspard kill the king, but the blue stone then chose the king's daughter and so he still didn't have it.
Sirus directed Gaspard and evil ringleader Flotsam to 100 years in their past to search for the red Atlamillia, as well as to erase to origin points of those places which held the biggest threat to his plans in the future. In that time period the destruction started fifteen years before the game's start, narrowing the search to Palm Brinks.
Eventually the red stone found its way into the possession of a boy, Max, who set out on a journey to see the world after being presented the opportunity while escaping Flotsam. He was later joined by Monica, who had used the blue stone to go to Max's time to restore the destroyed origin points for her time. Knowing that they would eventually come to him and that that would be his chance to get both stones, Sirus simply observed their progress for the most part. In the final confrontation with him, it's revealed that through watching Max he had begun to see that his actions were wrong, but was still too hurt and angry and so was unwilling to acknowledge it or to stop.
He didn't provide any direct interference until Gaspard attempted to turn his back on him in favor of seeing how Max's journey would end, rather than kill them and bring Sirus their Atlamillia. Feeling betrayed and not willing to simply allow this, he used a powerful magic to force Gaspard to shift into his monstrous alternate form and attack them, forcing Max and Monica to kill him, which in turn strengthened their resolve to confront Sirus.
When they finally made it to his time period, Sirus confronted them, pausing partway to see if they might understand the reasoning in his thoughts and finding justification when they could not. He pretended to lose to them and stole their Atlamillia when they came close to make sure he was defeated, using them to transform into a giant creature. He then told them the full legend of the stone and how the Ancients feared the humans of the future, and his plan the use the Star of Oblivion to end everything so the planet would eventually recover and live on. The fact that he would die with everyone else was just part of that plan.
Deciding that it would be boring to just wait though, he decided he would erase everything right before the true destruction. Using the three stones, he suspended the palace in the air in Max's time and began to launch magic to destroy various places. Max and Monica escaped, but he knew they'd return and didn't see them as a threat, so did nothing to stop them. Max and Monica managed to summon the flying fortress, Paznos, from the future to attack the floating palace using the Ancients' technology. Though Sirus hadn't been worried, the palace was hit with a blast and fell out of the sky...but the fact that it fell toward Palm Brinks and would have crushed it may mean that he let the cannon blast hit. It was only because Paznos transformed and intercepted the falling palace that it landed in in uninhabited place. Max and Monica were able to enter, but he wasn't there to confront them this time, having retired to the Sun Chamber after their escape.
Them restoring the garden began to free the memories he had locked away however, and this allowed Alexandra spirit to reach him. When they came to confront him again, he was ready and battled fiercely, though it's during this time that the events that led to his decision were revealed to everyone present. But he continued to fight and was badly injured the more he fought on. As he was defeated, Alexandra's spirit and his spirit were discussing his actions in a spirit form of the garden and she tried to make him acknowledge that he'd known for some time that he was wrong and remember the role he had in life. But he was unable to bring himself to do so.
The darkness that had consumed him escaped his body and attempted to kill him, having grown tired of his whining, though he was saved by Max. Then, using the three Atlamillia to gain a physical form it retreated outside. Max and Monica followed and then Sirus did, attempting to attack it with magic, but only served as a temporary distraction as it impaled him on a lance of dark energy and fatally wounded him. The Star was nearly ready to fall and Sirus stressed that they had to stop him, so they left him there to do so.
Somewhere between the Dark Element leaving his body and Max and Monica finally destroying it, Sirus recalled his true purpose in life and managed to stand long enough to explain, and use his powers to destroy the Star. Alexandra's spirit appeared expressed how proud she was of him and he turned to bid his new friends, Max and Monica, farewell before collapsing dead right there. He's last seen running up to Alexandra and hugging her in the afterlife's version of the palace garden.
